Digital twin for offshore wind sector
Wind farm operation and maintenance accounts for about 40% of total capex and opex, BV said, and digital twins can improve operation and maintenance performance by combining real-life turbine operating data with numerical modelling to improve understanding and enable a risk-based approach to maintenance. This, in turn, improves safety, cuts the risk of unplanned downtime and saves money.
The agreement between BV and ORE Catapult will result in a digital twin including 2D and 3D representations of the Levenmouth turbine in which post-processed supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA), condition monitoring data and manually collected inspection information can be combined into one unified database. The aim is to present this data to the turbine operator as intuitively as possible, to provide a clear understanding of the turbine’s condition and any possible risks to smooth operation. The digital twin will therefore support effective decision-making and ultimately reduce costs.
