Italy’s Grimaldi Group has ordered six new multi-purpose RoRo vessels from Hyundai Mipo Dockyard, South Korea, in a deal worth more than USD 500 million.

The 45,684dwt ships in the new G5 class will have capacities of 4,700 lane metres, 2,500 car-equivalent units and 2,000 twenty-foot containers, the company said. They will be deployed between North Europe and West Africa from 2023. The Naples-based company revealed that the G5 class will incorporate a range of environmental and energy-saving features, yielding a 43% reduction in carbon emissions per unit of cargo compared to other multipurpose RoRo ships in its fleet.

The scrubber-fitted ships will comply with IMO Tier III regulations on NOx and will be equipped for shore power supply during port calls. Meanwhile, variable frequency drives will reduce electricity consumption on board and low-friction hull coatings will cut resistance.

Company president, Gianluca Grimaldi, commented: “The new series of RoRo multi-purpose G5-class ships was designed to respond even more efficiently to the demand for quality transport services on deep sea routes, reconciling the needs related to international freight traffic with that of protecting the environment.”
