Singapore-based Ocean Network Express (ONE) has named the first of five new 13,800-TEU container ships, ONE Sparkle, at Hyundai Heavy Industries in South Korea. The vessel is the first newbuilding owned by the consortium which was established in 2017 by Japanese container lines, K Line, Mitsui OSK, and NYK.
The vessel has a range of sustainable features including various energy saving devices, an optimised hull form, smart technology integration, and a shore power connection capability. It is also ‘ready’ for methanol or ammonia dual-fuel conversion when these fuels become available at scale.
The Singapore-flagged boxship is classed by ABS and managed by OneSea Solutions Pte Ltd, a joint venture between ONE and Seaspan Corporation. The vessel is one of a series of 20 large ammonia/methanol-ready container ships that are due for delivery from shipyards in Japan and Korea this year and next.
ONE’s chief executive, Jeremy Nixon, commented: “The naming of ONE Sparkle represents another important milestone for ONE. This vessel is our first owned newbuilding, and it also showcases our commitment to sustainable shipping with its innovative design and alternative fuel capabilities. As we expand our owned fleet, these advanced vessels will play a crucial role in meeting our environmental targets while enhancing our service reliability.”
