Lloyd’s Register has awarded GazTransport & Technigaz (GTT) Approval in Principle (AiP) for a three-tank LNG carrier design with a range of environmental and operational benefits. The 200,000m3 vessel will have three cargo tanks instead of four; and it be designed for lower service speeds than existing LNG carriers, thereby cutting fuel consumption and emissions.

It is projected that the LNG design will reduce unit freight costs by up to 5.5% in 2025 and 14% by 2050 under emission regulations such as the EU Emissions Trading System and FuelEU Maritime. Voyage-based emissions are expected to fall by about 27%.

The classification evaluated the cargo tank design against both class standards and the International Code of the Construction and Equipment of Ships Carrying Liquefied Gases in Bulk (IGC Code). Particular attention was paid to the integrity of the three-tank arrangement under increased sloshing loads. The analysis covered various GTT containment systems including the Mark III Flex, Mark III Flex+, NO96 Super+, and GTT Next1. LR confirmed that they all met safety and performance criteria.

“This new design demonstrates that by challenging conventional thinking, we can reduce emission intensity without sacrificing transport capacity,” declared Panos Mitrou, the classification society’s Global Gas Segment director. “Similar to the industry’s progression from steam to four-stroke electric propulsion, and subsequently to two-stroke engines, the concept could represent a potential next technological leap for LNG carriers.”

GTT’s chief executive, Jean-Baptiste Choimet, commented: “This AiP from Lloyd’s Register is a major milestone for GTT and the LNG industry. Our three-tank design represents a significant leap forward in terms of efficiency and sustainability. By challenging conventional thinking and embracing innovation, we are paving the way for a greener future of LNG shipping.”
