Building of submarine construction hall starts

U.S. yard General Dynamics Electric Boat has started building a new hall at its Groton Shipyard for construction of the Columbia class of nuclear submarines for the U.S. Navy. "This expansion will be the largest construction project to take place at Electric Boat's Groton shipyard in more than 45 years," said Mr Jeffrey Geiger, president of General Dynamics Electric Boat. The South Yard Assembly Building will cover 66,000sq.m and will be the workplace of 1,400 personnel building the Columbia class submarines for the U.S. Navy. Electric Boat will also expand and update other manufacturing spaces and build a floating dry dock to launch Columbia submarines.
