China expands research into autonomous ships
China is expanding research into autonomous ships which sail without crews. Chinese company Zhuhai Yun Zhou Intelligent Technology has established a research and development centre called Xiangshan ocean technology port in Zhuhai in Guangdong province. It will be innovation centre for maritime unmanned system and marine intelligent equipment design, research and testing and is scheduled for commencing operation by the end of this year. With an investment of US$20 million, the base will lead and promote the fast development of unmanned marine system and intelligent equipment industry in China, said Mr Zhang Yunfei, chairman of the company.
