U.S. naval yard expands
U.S. naval shipbuilding group Huntington Ingalls announced that its Newport News Shipbuilding division has begun production at an additional site in Norfolk to support the shipyard’s move to increase capacity as demand for U.S. naval vessels increases. The Newport News Shipbuilding Norfolk Campus is initially being used to construct steel panels that will eventually make up units of the Gerald R. Ford-class aircraft carrier Enterprise (CVN 80) being built for the U.S. Navy. In addition to Enterprise panel production work, the site is freeing up storage space at the main shipyard in Newport News to support other programmes, including nuclear-powered submarine construction. The campus in Norfolk has spare space to allow for future growth opportunities.
