New smaller, more efficient, modular carbon-capture to be installed on Samskip vessel
Value Maritime says it will develop a new ‘innovative compact and modular’ onboard carbon capture system (OCCS) for installation aboard the LNG carrier Samskip Kvitbjorn, in collaboration with the Maritime Efficient & Easy Carbon Capture (ME2CC) project.
Value Maritime has installed its ‘Filtree’ OCCS on a number of ships, which have demonstrated they are capable of a 30% carbon emissions reduction at the funnel. In theory, Value Maritime has said, up to 90% of emissions could be captured by OCCS.
A problem for Filtree, however, is the high energy usage required to run it, common to all carbon capture systems, which ultimately increases the amount of fuel which must be burned to provide the power.
Samskip Kvitbjorn operates between Hammerfest and Rotterdam. The OCCS to be installed on the vessel, co-developed with ME2CC, will reduce height and footprint by a third compared to previous systems, and derives part of its electrical energy from exhaust gas waste heat recovery (WHR), giving it the vessel greater thermal efficiency and a lower fuel consumption, Value Maritime said in a statement. Furthermore, Value Maritime expects that the new system will be easy to install and remove, “opening the door to leasing models, lowering the barrier to entry for shipping companies”.
The captured CO2, meanwhile, will be offloaded in port and transported inland to be used to support industry and agriculture.
