In a second Econowind project, Anthony Veder has become the first company to install wind-assisted propulsion on a gas carrier, fitting two VentoFoil sails on the ethylene carrier Coral Patula. The VentoFoils aim to immediately reduce the vessel's carbon footprint, with plans to equip sister ship Coral Pearl later this year. This retrofit marks a significant step toward sustainable shipping by unlocking the potential of wind energy for existing gas carriers.

Björn van de Weerdhof, Anthony Veder's Commercial and Sustainability Director, emphasised the company's goal of reaching net-zero emissions by 2035. "While we optimise newbuilds and use (bio-) LNG, we also focus on improving the efficiency of our current fleet to reduce our carbon footprint immediately. Wind-assisted propulsion is crucial in this effort," he said.

Econowind’s Chief Operations Officer, Rens Groot, praised the fast-track project, noting that Anthony Veder's thorough analysis and tight execution timeline made the installation possible. The VentoFoils provide a propulsion boost by harnessing wind energy alongside traditional engines, potentially delivering fuel savings of 5% to over 10% in optimal wind conditions.

By cutting fuel consumption, Anthony Veder aims to lower greenhouse gas emissions and energy costs, setting a new benchmark for sustainability in the maritime industry.
