US naval shipbuilder and repairer Austal USA has broken ground on its new shipbuilding and repair facility, located just south of its existing yard in Mobile, Alabama.

The new yard will feature new, large fabrication facilities, waterfront improvements, and a new, large shiplift and transfer facility. It is expected to be operational by summer 2026.

The yard's new shiplift and transfer is being designed by Miami, Florida-based Pearlson and will feature a lifting platform measuring approximately 137.16m x 38.1m, with a lifting/launching capacity of vessels in excess of 18,000 long tonnes.

The new shiplift will facilitate the launching and drydocking of the US Navy’s new Constellation class of frigates, T-AGOS 25-class Ocean Surveillance Ships, Independence-variant Littoral Combat Ships, and the US Coast Guard’s Heritage-class offshore patrol cutters.
