Berg Propulsion launches OpWind System to enhance sail and engine efficiency

Berg Propulsion has introduced its new OpWind software, designed to optimise the combined operation of sails and propellers, enhancing fuel efficiency. Launched on October 7, in Hönö, Sweden, OpWind aims to maximise fuel savings by automatically adjusting propeller speed and blade angle based on wind propulsion input.

The system continuously monitors a vessel's operation data and sail contribution, automatically adjusting propeller pitch and speed to ensure the most efficient use of both wind and engine power. Developed from Berg's Dynamic Drive technology, OpWind compares theoretical calculations with real-time measurements to optimise vessel performance in various sea conditions.

Chief Technology Officer Emil Cerdier explained, "OpWind is more advanced than Dynamic Drive and can be used on any vessel with sails to identify the optimal operating actions. Fuel savings will depend on the vessel's configuration, operating profile, and sail size, but they are expected to be substantial."

The system offers multiple modes, allowing settings for desired speed, fuel consumption, or constant propeller thrust. Additionally, OpWind can facilitate onboard power generation during sailing mode, further enhancing efficiency.

Berg has already received its first order for OpWind, signalling strong industry interest in combining sail and engine operations for sustainable shipping.
