Caterpillar collaboration with Helm Connect to improve workboat operations

A joint project between Caterpillar and Helm Connect is set to provide better information on engine efficiency. The move is set to optimise operations specifically for the workboat sector, where Caterpillar engines and generators are particularly well-represented.

Helm’s Connect system will give operators access to real-time engine data, including engine hours and moment-to-moment fuel efficiency data.

The system is also expected to improve maintenance schedules and facilitate the first step from an ethos of reactive repair and toward one of planned maintenance. SRN heard recently that while reactively fixing a broken component might yield more time alongside, implementing predictive maintenance will improve slot planning, ultimately yielding as much benefit for shipyards as it is expected to do for owners.

Customers benefit from the combined strengths of two industry leaders: Caterpillar’s robust digital marine technology and Helm Operations’ innovative Helm Connect software,” explained Paul Cyr, Helm Operations’ Manager of Partnerships. “Together, they set a new benchmark for maritime operations, paving the way for a more efficient and data-driven future.”
