India-based company Cochin Shipyard Limited (CSL) has commenced commercial operations at the newly developed International Ship Repair Facility (ISRF) in Kochi with the successful docking of the HSC Parali of the Union Territory of Lakshadweep Administration.

The Kerala state-owned shipyard is eager to establish itself as a global ship repair hub for both commercial vessels and naval/military craft. This development comes at a time when CSL is witnessing significant growth - the company reported a substantial 59.83% jump in shipbuilding revenue alongside a 62.88% increase in ship repair revenue year-on-year for the quarter ending in June 2024. The newly launched ISRF is expected to further boost this revenue stream, attracting a wider range of clients due to its enhanced capacity and modern facilities.

The ISRF, a 970 crore INR project (approximately USD 115.5 million), is located on a 42-acre site on Willingdon Island, Kochi, leased from the Cochin Port Authority and located only a short distance from the shipyard. The project was led and managed by Germany’s Inros Lackner SE and India’s Tata Consulting Engineers Ltd, and construction was completed by Kochi-based RDS Projects Ltd.

The completed ship repair hub features a graving dock, measuring 66m x 12.5m x 4m, and is equipped with a 6,000-tonnes ship lift and transfer system, designed by Germany’s IMG and Norway’s Syncrolift AS. The facilities host six dry repair berths, and approximately 1,400m of berthing space that will allow it to handle vessels of up to 130m x 24m.

A Maritime Park is also being developed adjacent to the ISRF, with ten globally renowned marine service and repair companies in agreement to set up operations in its first phase. One of these companies, Kongsberg Maritime, will provide local specialist technical support for newbuilding and other projects undertaken within the Cochin Shipyard and general support for customers in the Kochi region. Further plans for the region include the assembly and overhaul of Kongsberg Maritime’s range of Kamewa waterjets, as part of a strategic move to support the Indian Government’s ‘Make in India’ protectionist strategy.
