The US Navy’s Naval Sea Systems Command (NavSea) has exercised its option to build a sixth yard, repair, berthing and messing vessel (YRBM barge) at the Morgan City, Louisiana-based Conrad Shipyard LLC.

The newbuilding is destined for service at the US Navy’s Norfolk Naval Yard, in Norfolk, Virginia, when delivered in June 2025.

The YRBM barges provide a temporary home away from home and workplace for service men and women whose vessels are undergoing repair and maintenance work at the shipyard.

The YRBM barge is an ABS A1 accommodation vessel measuring 46m x 14.9m x 4.3m and is capable of providing alongside accommodation for service personnel, including berths for 199 men and women and messing facilities for 300 people.

The barge also offers space for medical offices, classrooms, workspaces, laundry rooms and lounge areas.

Conrad Shipyard’s first YRBM barge in this contract was delivered in early 2024 and will followed by three more barges this year, with newbuildings five and six following in 2025.
