Norwegian Cruise Line’s 167,725gt 2017-built Norwegian Joy arrived at leading Dutch ship repairer Damen Verolme Rotterdam on 23 January and was immediately drydocked to begin her major upgrade project, which is expected to be completed by 12 February.

The workscope on the vessel, which arrived from Miami, via Southampton, where she discharged her passengers, includes technical maintenance of thrusters, stabilisers and Azipod propulsion drives, while the underwater hull will be blasted and receive a new, more efficient antifouling coating.

On the hotel side, Norwegian Joy will be fitted with 24 new balcony cabins on the portside of Deck 15. This expansion in passenger capacity will be achieved by repurposing part of the existing Observation Lounge. This work will see new cabin modules, prefabricated bathrooms, in addition to upgrade of the vessel’s HVAC, electrical and plumbing systems. Meanwhile, the Owners Suites in the Haven will be enlarged to offer three bedrooms, including the full renovation of the living room and master bedroom, while a new separate dining room will be fitted, overlooking the forward-facing Haven Horizon Lounge. Planning for the upgrade of Norwegian Joy started in early 2022.

Meanwhile, also undergoing repair at this yard on 23 January were the following vessels:

  • Noble Regina Allen – 16,146gt 2013-built offshore jack-up drilling rig, owned by US-based Noble Corp. This rig is undergoing major mechanical repairs to its jack-up system while operating in the Caribbean
  • Saipem 7000 – 117,812gt 1987-built offshore pipelay and crane vessel, owned by Italy’s Saipem, Milan
