Damen Air Cavity System's fuel efficiency verified by Lloyd’s Register

The system can be responsible for an emissions reduction of up to 8%, Damen claims 8Source: Damen)

Damen’s Air Cavity System (DACS) has received independent fuel efficiency verification from classification society Lloyd’s Register (LR), confirming its potential to reduce fuel consumption and emissions. This marks the second verification of DACS’ capabilities, following a similar assessment by RINA earlier.

Developed in collaboration with Delft University of Technology (TU Delft), DACS works by creating a thin air layer over the hull, reducing water resistance and, in turn, lowering fuel use. The system was first installed on Amisco’s cargo vessel Danita, where trials showed fuel savings of 6-7%. To further validate these findings, Damen provided the data to LR, which independently confirmed a fuel reduction of 7-8% at typical operating speeds.

These results not only offer fuel savings but also contribute to environmental compliance, aligning with regulations such as the EU Emissions Trading System (EU ETS), Carbon Intensity Indicator (CII), and Energy Efficiency Existing Ship Index (EEXI). Damen’s system promises significant fuel savings and a return on investment in approximately three years.
