Damen scrubber retrofit on Van Oord Nexus

Damen Shipyards Group has successfully installed selective catalytic reduction (SCR) systems on Van Oord’s Nexus, a Damen Offshore Carrier (DOC 8500) used for cable laying in the offshore wind sector. The upgrade, which includes five SCR units – one for each engine – has reduced the vessel’s nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions by up to 80%.

The SCR systems, part of Damen’s Marine NOx Reduction technology developed in 2015, use a catalyst to react with injected urea, chemically reducing NOx emissions from exhaust gases. Damen customised the system for the Nexus, meeting specific requirements for the vessel.

The project showcased the synergy within the Damen Group. Van Oord’s manager Projects Fleet, Hein Leemhuis, highlighted the convenience of Damen’s “one-stop-shop” solution, which handled everything from feasibility studies to engineering and installation, including ensuring the system met certification standards.

The compact SCR system, combining a damper and scrubber in one unit, was ideal for the retrofit, saving space on the existing vessel. This project is part of Van Oord’s commitment to sustainability and reduced emissions, aligning with both companies' goals in the offshore wind sector. After installation, the Nexus was independently tested, confirming the significant reduction in NOx emissions.

The collaboration between Damen and Van Oord exemplifies a shared drive for innovation and sustainability in maritime operations.
