The Emden Werft und Dock GmbH (EWD) shipyard, situated in the city of Emden close to the German-Dutch border, has completed work on feeder container ship Samskip Express, after being commissioned by Hamburg-based shipowner Ernst Russ.

The vessel, flying the flag of Portugal, operates under the management of the Reederei Köpping shipping company from Rendsburg, Germany. It was built in 2006 by Damen Shipyards in The Netherlands, with a capacity of 800 TEU.

Works on the vessel have included a new silicone-based underwater hull coating, designed to improve the vessel’s fuel efficiency; propeller shaft inspection and overhaul; a new seal applied to the vessel’s rudder; and re-worked blades for the vessel’s propeller.

"We have overhauled numerous crucial components whose flawless functioning is of relevance to the ongoing ship operation," said EWD project manager Rainer Schröder.

EWD managing director Björn Sommer expressed delight at having a new customer, saying: “Our team is able to carry out… demanding steel work on the ship, tank cleaning, maintenance work on the sewage tanks and repairs to the container guidance system in the cargo hold area. EWD also attaches great importance to meeting deadlines.”
