Gibraltar-based shipyard Gibdock has hosted a high-profile defence ship repair event at the House of Commons, bringing together government, industry, and defence sector leaders.
Hosted by Lord West, former First Sea Lord, the event featured speeches from Defence Procurement Minister Maria Eagle MP, Defence Committee Chair Tan Dhesi MP, and Gibdock Advisory Board Chair Alan Donnelly. Discussions focused on the strategic role of ship repair in maintaining fleet readiness and operational capability.
Key topics included the importance of secure repair infrastructure, Gibdock’s expertise in servicing naval and commercial vessels, and opportunities for collaboration. Speakers praised Gibdock’s efficiency and strategic value in supporting UK maritime operations.
Maria Eagle MP highlighted Gibraltar’s vital role in national security, while Tan Dhesi MP described Gibdock as a "profitable, efficient shipyard" with significant potential for UK defence. Lord West emphasised the growing demand for ship repair facilities, noting Gibdock’s importance in meeting future needs.
Since its acquisition by Balaena in 2022, Gibdock has modernised operations, enhancing efficiency, safety, and sustainability. As a key maritime hub at the Mediterranean’s gateway, Gibdock continues to support the UK’s Royal Navy, Royal Fleet Auxiliary, and NATO partners with high-quality repair services.
