Dutch heavy lift specialist Mammoet has entered into an agreement with the DHO joint venture (Dragados Hawaiian Dredging/Orion) to provide transportation and lifting services of the new Drydock No. 5 in the US Navy’s Pearl Harbour Shipyard in Hawaii.

This initiative stems from the USN's Shipyard Infrastructure Optimisation Programme (SIOP), which aims to support Pearl Harbour Naval Shipyard and Intermediate Maintenance Facilities ability to continue the USN decades into the future by maintaining the Pacific Fleet’s nuclear-powered submarines.

Under the agreement, Mammoet will be responsible for the transport, using SPMTs, lifting services, and specialised gearing. This toolbox of equipment will be used to install the drydock’s dock floor sections, which weigh upwards of 4,000 tonnes each.

The initial work of installing the foundation piles in the harbour waters has already started, with the project expected to be completed by late 2027.

The new drydock will be deeper than the existing graving that it will replace and will be able to accommodate the USN’s Los Angeles-class and Virginia-class of attack boats for repair, maintenance, and modernisation.

Upon completion, the new Drydock No. 5 in Pearl Harbour is expected to have a significant service life.

Meanwhile, Mammoet has also been involved in the modernisation of the historic, multi-mission Drydock No. 1 at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard in Maine.
