South Korea’s HD Hyundai Marine Solution (Hyundai) is to retrofit a reliquefaction system on board the Greek-owned 2008-built 155,000m3 capacity LNG carrier Cool Ranger. The dual-fuel diesel-electric (DFDE) vessel is fitted with GTT Mark III cargo tanks and two-stage LD compressors and is one of eight LNG carriers owned by Athens-based Thenamaris Shipping. Cool Ranger, built by Hyundai Heavy Industries, is currently on charter to Japan’s K-Line, which has sub-chartered the vessel to Tokyo Gas Tanker.

The turnkey contract will see Hyundai provide the Greek owner with engineering, procurement, installation and commissioning (EPIC) services. Reliquefaction equipment plays a vital role in liquefying natural vapourised gas back into the cargo hold, or preventing natural vapourisation by using supercoiled LNG, thereby minimising LNG cargo losses. Moreover, the retrofit of Cool Ranger will reduce the LNG carrier’s CO2 emissions.

Meanwhile, just one day after delivering South Korea’s initial public offering (IPO) in two years, HD Hyundai Marine Solution revealed its next goals – 25% growth in annual revenue for the next three years and increased investments to tackle marine emissions.

The company also said that it would use its proceeds from the IPO to invest in shipyards in Southeast Asia and develop technologies for repairing vessels in “greener” ways.
