Malaysia’s new USD 3.17 billion port KLIP to feature major new ship repair facility

The official groundbreaking ceremony for Malaysia’s new USD 3.17 billion Kuala Linggi International Port (KLIP) took place on January 24th. KLIP, which is situated strategically facing the Malacca Straits, one of the world’s busiest waterways, will also include a major new ship repair yard and heavy industry fabrication yard.

KLIP is being created on a 620-acre artificial island off the Malaysian mainland, southeast of Port Klang, with the new ship repair yard covering a total of 131 acres. No details of the drydocking capacity of KLIP have yet been revealed, despite SRN contacting various major players in the project since the start of this year, without reply.

An Memorandum of Understanding has been signed with China’s Anhua Haotong Energy (Shenzen) Co to invest in the development, construction and operation of the new ship repair and fabrication yard.

An RM 800 million dredging contract for KLIP has been signed with China’s CCCC Dredging Southeast Asia, a subsidiary of CCCC Dredging (Group) Co Ltd, one of the world’s largest dredging operators. Dredging work started at the end of 2023 and will be undertaken in stages.

KLIP will be operated and managed by three companies:

  • T.A.G. Marine Sdn Bhd – port operator
  • Lingii Base Sdn Bhd – master developer of the port
  • T.A.G. Logistics Management Sdn BHD – providing husbandry services to the port and port agents
