MAN Energy Solutions reports that its methanol engine order book has grown to 95 and that a pioneering methanol engine retrofit, a G95ME-C10.5 type, is currently undergoing sea trials in China.

Some 210 ME-LGIM (liquid gas injection methanol) engines are currently on order or in use, MAN says.

"Interest in methanol is taking off for newbuildings and retrofits,” reported Peter Quaade, MAN Energy Solutions head of Dual-Fuel Engine Group, Two-Stroke Engine Support. "Our dual-fuel methanol concept is proven and, to date, has accumulated over half a million running hours running on methanol alone."

"The interest in methanol retrofits is also growing. Indeed, the world’s first methanol engine retrofit – a G95ME-LGIM type – is currently undergoing sea trials in China, which we anticipate will increase interest in this approach to decarbonisation."

MAN’s methanol retrofit is not the world’s first by some margin; instead, this honour could more plausibly be attributed to ferry Stena Germanica, whose four Wärtsilä Z40 four-stroke engines were retrofitted to use methanol as far back as 2015. It may, however, be the first container ship main engine to be retrofitted to methanol.
