Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Ltd (MDL) has partnered with Dutch firm Royal HaskoningDHV for a Rs 5,000-crore expansion to develop two new shipbuilding and repair yards in Mumbai. The project aims to boost MDL’s capacity for large warships and commercial vessels.
The Nhava Yard, a 40-acre greenfield site, will feature India’s largest shipbuilding drydock, measuring nearly 600m long and 60m wide, capable of handling aircraft carriers and Suezmax tankers. The South Yard Annexe, adjacent to MDL’s existing facility, will include a wet basin, drydock, and roll-on/roll-off facilities.
“Driving this expansion is our growing order book and need for new shipbuilding and repair facilities,” said Biju George, director of Shipbuilding at MDL. “These best-in-class yards will have the flexibility to function independently and be able to work together as a single integrated yard, meaning three yards can each work on different modules of the same vessel at the same time. This modular construction approach can reduce lead times and costs, further strengthening the call to ‘Make in India.’”
Royal HaskoningDHV will oversee shipyard planning, environmental surveys, and engineering design. Sustainability is a key focus, with solar power and low-carbon designs meeting Indian Green Buildings Council standards.
Construction is set to begin after an 18-month design phase, with Nhava Yard expected to be completed in 48 months and South Yard Annexe in 36 months. MDL is also exploring export and commercial orders to expand its global presence.
