Sweden’s marine battery system supplier Echandia is to convert Öresundslinjen’s double-ender ferry Hamlet from diesel power to full electric operation. The battery system is scheduled to be delivered in the first half of 2025. Öresundslinjen is a subsidiary of Molslinjen, Denmark’s largest domestic ferry operator. Although no shipyard has yet been named to undertake this project, it is expected that the work will be undertaken at Sweden’s Öresundsvarvet yard in Landskrona.

Operating on the Helsingør-Helsingborg route, the 10,067gt 1997-built Hamlet crosses the Öresund strait up to 8,000 times annually. The ferry’s new battery system is tailored for a minimum operational lifespan of ten years without requiring battery replacement. Furthermore, the battery can be recharged in both ports in as little as eleven minutes on average.

“After evaluating multiple battery suppliers for this significant conversion project, the superior lifetime and weight of the Echandia battery system stood out as the primary reason why Echandia emerged as the optimal choice for us,” said Kristian Durhuus, CEO of Molslinjen. “These factors contribute to the total cost of ownership and environmental footprint when compared with other options,” he concluded.
