New consortium for four-frigate upgrade

thyssenkrupp Marine Systems (TKMS) and Thales, the original equipment manufacturers of four frigates built for the Hellenic Navy about 30 years ago, have joined forces to set up a consortium to undertake modernisation of the MEKO® 200 HN vessels.

Under the terms of the consortium agreement signed in December, TKMS will undertake modernisation of the ships’ platform with supply of design documents and communication systems. A subcontract is to be awarded to Hagenuk Marinekommunikation, an Atlas Elektronik subsidiary.

Thales will provide the combat system, using the combat management system, Tacticos, as the foundation. At the same time, it will assume the role of spokesperson in the partnership consortium, to be based at Hengelo in the Netherlands.

CEO of thyssenkrupp Marine Systems, Oliver Burkhard, said: “With the joint contract for the modernisation of the frigates, we are once again a strong partner for the Hellenic Navy. On the one hand, this further strengthens our order book and, on the other, underlines our role and strength as a maritime powerhouse that combines electronics, surface, and underwater shipbuilding under one roof. A further milestone on our road to independence of thyssenkrupp Marine Systems.”

thyssenkrupp Marine Systems will subcontract the ship platform modifications to a local Greek shipyard. The consortium will be the exclusive contact for the Hellenic Navy. It is expected that the order will be received this year.
