OSG expands use of graphene-based propeller coating after positive results

Overseas Shipholding Group (OSG) has announced the extension of its use of GIT Coatings’ graphene-based propeller coating, XGIT-PROP, across seven additional crude oil tankers. The decision follows the successful application of the coating on one OSG vessel in October 2023, which resulted in notable fuel savings and improved vessel performance. Third-party analysis of the vessel’s performance along a Pacific Ocean trade route confirmed the coating’s effectiveness.

OSG’s decision to expand the use of XGIT-PROP reflects a broader industry trend toward adopting technologies aimed at improving vessel efficiency while addressing environmental concerns. The coating, which is biocide-free and designed to prevent fouling, helps maintain a smooth surface on propellers, potentially reducing fuel consumption and lowering operating costs.

The company has expressed its commitment to sustainability, with Eric Schreiber, OSG’s director of Operational Excellence, stating that the coating aligns with their ongoing efforts to improve performance and reduce environmental impact. "We’ve seen clear benefits in vessel efficiency, and this technology fits into our broader sustainability strategy," Schreiber said.

Since its launch in 2022, XGIT-PROP has been applied to over 400 vessels worldwide, indicating growing adoption of the coating in the maritime sector.
