Regal Princess returns to service after engine trouble
Cruise ship Regal Princess has been repaired at Galveston after a number of issues with the vessel’s generators forced Princess Cruises to cancel several sailings.
The vessel suffered an engine fire several days into a transatlantic voyage from the US to Southampton, causing the subsequent cancellation of two Caribbean sailings scheduled in late October and the start of November.
The cruise ship was due to leave Galveston on 27 October, calling at destinations in Honduras, Belize and Mexico. A second cruise was due to depart on 3 November, but was also cancelled.
A third sailing, set to depart on 10 November, was subsequently cancelled after a second generator failed, a “new and unforeseen development.”
“… Additional time out of service is needed to ensure the ship is fully operational and safe,” Princess Cruises said in a statement. “We understand how disappointing this is for our guests and are truly sorry for the disruption to their plans.”
Regal Princess is now repaired, and departed on Sunday, 17 November. It will relocate to Southampton in April.
“Our team has worked diligently to ensure Regal Princess is fully operational and ready to deliver a safe, comfortable, and enjoyable cruise experience,” said Princess Cruises. “We look forward to welcoming guests aboard and appreciate their patience and understanding as we resolved these technical matters.”
