Sweden’s Stena RoRo has signed a contract, on behalf of Stena Line, with China Merchants Jinling (Wehai) Shipyard to significantly increase the cargo capacity of the freight RoRo sisters Stena Forerunner and Stena Foreteller. The conversion contract will be finalised in 2025 and both vessels redelivered by the end of that year.

The work to be carried out in China will increase the freight capacity of each vessel by 30%. This will be achieved by adding an extra freight deck on each vessel, as opposed to the more traditional method of lengthening the ships by inserting a new midbody section.

Meanwhile, work will be also undertaken on each RoRo to increase the duo’s sustainability, including increasing the capacity of the vessels thrusters, and preparing the vessels for the installation of shore power systems.

The conversion of each vessel will enable them to meet future efficiency requirements.

In 2022 Stena started the decarbonisation process on each vessel by fitting new propellers, the application of a new silicone-based antifouling hull coating and the fitting of interceptors.

Stena Forerunner and Stena Foreteller were built in 2003 and 2001, respectively, and can each carry at present 3,000 lanemetres of freight vehicles.
