Germany’s Strela Shiprepair Yard has successfully completed repairs to its first inland waterways vessel. The vessel in question was the Future Carrier Josephine Kaja which the Stralsund yard replaced 146 tons of steel in her cargo hold, with repairs being completed on July 11th after the vessel spent eight weeks at the yard.

This vessel specialises in the transport of copper ore cargoes from Brunsbüttel, at the southern end of the Kiel Canal, to Hamburg, a cargo which can be extremely corrosive.

The 2,742dwt Josephine Kaja was built in 2002 and is owned by the Schramm Group of Schleswig Holstein.

Work on the inland vessel involved the entire 818m2 cargo hold floor being replaced with new 20mm steel plates, while the bulkheads and sides of the cargo hold were at the same time reinforced.

The vessel also received six additional water ballast pumps to improve its stability during loading and discharge operations.
