Leading marine technology group Wärtsilä is to supply its EnergoFlow and EnergoProFin propulsion systems to four Medium-Range (MR) chemical tankers owned and operated by New York-based International Seaways. The devices will be used to upgrade the ship's existing Wärtsilä c.p. propeller systems, resulting in an estimated fuel saving of 5%.

The four 47,000dwt tankers, all built in 2007, will be equipped with the Wärtsilä systems from summer 2024 during planned dry dockings. The four vessels are:

  • Seaways Galle
  • Seaways Gatun
  • Seaways Hercules
  • Seaways Huron

The four chemical tankers are the first Ice-Class 1AFS to be fitted with the EnergoFlow system.

By reducing the fuel consumption of each ship, the US owner said it will strengthen its actions towards decarbonised operations and continue to meet the requirements of the Carbon Intensity Index (CII).

The propeller upgrading project followed a targeted engineering study to optimise existing propulsion systems.
