WinGD launches LPG ‘pre-fit’ option
Designed for ammonia but adaptable for LPG with minimal modifications, the X-DF-P engine gives ship operators flexibility amid uncertainties about the timing and impact of switching fuels. According to WinGD's Vice President R&D, Sebastian Hensel, the option represents a step towards smarter and more sustainable ship power, especially for gas carrier operators looking to enter the evolving ammonia market.
“This development highlights our continuous innovation in support of smarter, sustainable ship power solutions. Our X-DF-A ammonia engine is already enjoying wide uptake amongst bulk carriers and gas carriers; the X-DF-P offers a valuable intermediate step for gas carrier operators who are keen to participate in the emerging ammonia trade but are uncertain about the timing and impact on vessel engines and fuels,” said Hensel.
This development holds significant implications for the ship retrofit market, where flexibility in fuel types is increasingly crucial as decarbonisation efforts intensify. The X-DF-P engine supports the transition by enabling ships to start with LPG and shift to ammonia as fuel infrastructure and regulatory frameworks mature, potentially extending vessel lifespan and lowering emissions. The retrofit-ready approach also caters to growing demand for multi-fuel and very large gas carriers.
